Following my journey from writing a stage show to competing at The Magic Circle, I was honoured to be invited to headline one of Nottingham’s most exciting magic events—The Curious Cabaret.
What is The Curious Cabaret?
Held on the first Tuesday of every month at The Berliner in Beeston, Nottingham, The Curious Cabaret is a spectacular ticketed magic show hosted by the brilliant Chris Wilder. Featuring world-class magicians from around the globe, it’s a night of incredible magic, delicious food, and expertly crafted cocktails—all for around £20 per ticket.
The show follows an engaging format:
Chris Wilder comperes the night with his signature charm.
A newcomer act opens the show.
Two headline acts take centre stage—one midway through and another to close the show.
My Experience as a Headliner
Recently, I had the privilege of performing as one of the headline acts alongside the phenomenal Tom Wright, a renowned comedy magician. This was an amazing opportunity for me to refine my show and take it to the next level.
Not only was it a two-night event (previously running at Peggy’s Skylight on Wednesdays), but it was also a high-pressure performance—my family, a large lay audience, experienced magicians, and close friends were all in attendance!
The Magic of Perception
My act explores how magic exists within perception—how the way we see the world, pause to reflect, and embrace wonder shapes our experiences.
The performance included:
Drinks appearing in a flash of fire, impossible changes and predictions 🔥🥃
Short meaningful stories that tie it all together 🐶❤️
A surprise twist ending with a visual call back 🎭✨
A Night to Remember
The response to the show was incredible. The audience reaction was overwhelmingly positive, and I received amazing feedback from both regular attendees and newcomers. Some even said it was their favourite Curious Cabaret yet!
One of the highlights was working alongside such an exceptional team—people I’m lucky to call my friends.
Special shoutouts to:
Matt AL, who learned all my sound cues in 10 minutes while eating a hotdog 🌭🎧
Andrew Stannard (a.k.a. The Magician Detective), who delivered an amazing opening act and rehearsed with me weekly leading up to the show 🕵️♂️✨
Mike & Caleb, invaluable stagehands and technical assistants, who managed prop setups and kept me calm on the night 🎭🔧
Caleb, who has since moved back to New Zealand and is already deeply missed 🇳🇿❤️
Why You Should Experience The Curious Cabaret
The only thing missing from this incredible event? More awareness! While it frequently sells out, it has huge potential to grow into something even bigger, running on multiple nights and reaching an even wider audience.
