I still don’t think it’s properly sunk in.
On 2nd February 2026, I walked into The Magic Circle headquarters in London hoping to do my best.
I walked out as Close-Up Magician of the Year 2026… and honestly, I’m still trying to process that sentence.
The Competition That Every Magician Knows
If you’re not a magician, let me give you a bit of context.
Winning this title isn’t just “another award.” It’s one of the most respected accolades in British magic: The Magic Circle Close-Up Magician of the Year.
The competition has been running for decades, with winners going all the way back to the 1960s. And it’s not just a list of names—it’s a who’s who of magic.
We’re talking about legends like:
Michael Vincent
Fay Presto
David Penn
All former winners of the same title I now somehow hold.
Every year, some of the best close-up magicians in the country compete, each with just 10 minutes to prove themselves in front of expert judges and a live audience.
No hiding. No second takes. No camera tricks.
Just you, your magic, and a room full of people who really know what they’re looking at.

What It’s Actually Like to Compete in The Magic Circle Close-Up Magician of The Year 2026
People often imagine magic competitions as fun, relaxed, and creative.
They’re… not wrong. But they’re also missing something important.
It’s intense.
Backstage, you’re surrounded by incredible performers. Everyone has put in months (if not years) of work. You can hear the audience reacting to every act before you. And you know that in a few moments… it’s your turn.
You walk out knowing:
You’re being judged on technical skill
Your originality
Your performance
And how much you actually entertain
That combination is what makes this competition so respected. It’s not just about fooling people, it’s about creating something memorable.

The History Makes It Heavier
What really hits you is the history.
The Magic Circle itself dates back to 1905 and is widely considered the most prestigious magic society in the world.
And this competition sits right at the heart of it.
Some years have even made history:
Joint winners (a rare occurrence)
Multiple-time champions
Performers who go on to become global names
So when you step onto that stage, you’re not just performing.
You’re stepping into a legacy.

My Journey to This Moment
What makes this even more surreal for me is that I didn’t enter expecting to win.
In fact, last year I entered for the first time… and came third.
That result was both amazing and frustrating.
It showed me I was close but also that there was more work to do.
And that’s one of the biggest hidden benefits of competitions like this:
They force you to improve.
Having a deadline pushes you creatively in a way nothing else does. You refine, cut, rebuild, and rethink everything until only the strongest material remains.
For me, that meant taking what I do best - close-up magic, and adapting it into something that could play to a room full of people while still feeling intimate, visual, and original.
The Night It Happened
When the results were announced, it came in stages.
First, I heard my name called for the Audience Choice Award.
That alone meant a huge amount to me. The act was designed for real people - to connect, to entertain, so that kind of reaction is everything.
Then came the runner-up…
And then, somehow, my name was called again.
First place.
The Magic Circle Close-Up Magician of the Year 2026.
That moment is very hard to put into words.

What Happens After You Win?
Chaos. In the best way.
Within hours, everything changes:
You’re suddenly being introduced differently
Opportunities start appearing
And you’re thrown straight back into performing… but now with a new title attached to your name
Less than 24 hours later, I was already back on stage performing again, this time as The Magic Circle Close-Up Magician of the Year 2026.
That’s a strange feeling.
Why This Means So Much
For me, this isn’t just about winning a competition.
It’s about:
Years of performing
Countless hours of practice
Support from friends, mentors, and family
And taking a chance on entering in the first place
Because the truth is…
A lot of magicians never enter.
And I completely understand why.
But if there’s one thing I’ve taken from this experience, it’s this:
The real reward isn’t the trophy. It’s who you become in the process.

Final Thoughts
I’m incredibly proud to now be part of this competition’s history.
To have my name alongside so many magicians I’ve looked up to for years is something I’ll never take for granted.
And if you’re reading this because you’re curious about high-level close-up magic…
This is what it looks like at its very best: live, real, and happening right in front of you.
If you’d like to experience it for yourself, you know where to find me.
